Storm Damage

Posted 27/05/2011

We have suffered great damage this week, when many of our polytunnels were destroyed in a violent storm on Monday. We had nearly 50 hectares of tunnels erected on Monday morning, but winds of up to 160km/h left only 1 ha unaffected by Monday night. However we still expect our harvest to be on schedule, and with the help of the many people who have already arrived on the farm, we are dismantling all the broken tunnels and rebuilding them as fast as possible. You can see the damage in the photos, and people clearing the broken hoops. For those of you who are still to leave to come to our farm, we can assure you that there will still be as much work to do, and we are still looking forward to a good harvest. We expect to re-cover all the strawberries within two weeks, but it will take longer to finish the work on the raspberries and blueberries. The start of strawberry picking will be delayed, as the crops are in the open air for a few days and it has been very cold in Scotland since the storm. The forecast for later in June is for sunny warm weather, so we are hoping it is correct.
